I’m Thankful

Duelling Pre-Amps

I recently purchased an ION Profile Pro turntable and wondered why I could not get it to work with my Marantz receiver, circa 1974. Plugging the RCA phone jacks into the Phono input resulted in a loud feedback type hum and I though my speakers were going to blow. I then plugged the RCA jacks into the AUX input and now everything is Jake! My take on this is that both the receiver and turntable contain pre-amps, so plugging into the Phono input was not a good thing. Can anyone out there confirm this opinion?

  • Hi William,

    Thanks for posting.

Yes, this is correct. The Profile Pro, as well as all of our other USB turntables have a built-in pre-amp. Because of this, connecting your turntable to a phono-level input is not recommended because that can damage the built-in pre-amp. Instead, you should connect your turntable to a line-level input, such as a Tape, AUX, or CD input.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions.
